UHF Radios Perth
Reliable 4x4 Communication for WA Adventures

Communication is key when you’re out on the tracks. Coastals 4×4 provides top-quality UHF radios in Perth to keep you connected with your convoy and informed about track conditions. We stock a wide range of UHF CB radios and accessories, including renowned Aussie brands GME and Uniden, known for their clarity and ruggedness. Whether you need a simple in-car 2-way radio for weekend trips or a full communications setup with high-gain antennas for remote touring, we have you covered. Our expert installers will integrate the UHF neatly into your 4WD, ensuring optimal performance and a factory-like look. Don’t head bush without a reliable UHF radio – it can be both a convenience and a lifesaver.

Choosing Your UHF Radio

We offer both fixed in-car UHF units and handheld UHF radios, depending on your needs:

  • In-Car UHF CB Radios: These mount in your 4×4 and are powered by the vehicle’s electrical system. Popular models include the GME XRS Connect series and Uniden’s compact units. Many modern UHFs have a remote head or controller mic, meaning most of the unit hides away under the dash, and all controls (channel, volume) are on the handset microphone. This is great for a clean install, especially as newer vehicles have limited dash space. We often install the speaker/mic unit up near the driver for easy reach, and hide the main transceiver behind the dash or console. If you prefer a traditional DIN-sized UHF (to fit a radio slot), we have those too. In-car UHFs typically output 5 watts (max legal power) for the best range.

  • Handheld UHF Radios: Ideal as a backup or for spotters when tricky maneuvering (like one person outside guiding a recovery). We carry 5W handhelds from GME and Oricom, which can reach several kilometers line-of-sight. They’re also handy if you want to communicate between vehicles when you’re out of the car. Handhelds have limited range compared to a vehicle unit with an external antenna, but they are very convenient. Some customers get a pair of handhelds to complement their fixed radio setup.

Most customers opt for a fixed unit in each vehicle for primary use, and maybe a handheld or two for versatility. We’ll discuss your usage – if you do large convoys or remote trips, definitely a vehicle-mounted unit with a quality antenna is recommended.

Antennas and Range

The antenna you pair with your UHF is crucial. We provide and install UHF antennas that suit Perth and WA conditions:

  • Gain and Size: UHF antennas come in different gains (dBi). A higher gain (6-9dBi) antenna concentrates signal to cover longer distances in flat open areas – great for desert roads or highway convoys. Lower gain (3-4dBi or unity) antennas have a more spherical broadcast which works better in hilly or forested terrain (signal can bounce and cover closer range without as many dropouts). Many WA travelers carry two antennas or a compromise mid-gain (like 6dBi) for all-round use. We typically recommend a medium gain (6.6dBi) fiberglass whip antenna as a starter – they perform well in mixed terrain.

  • Antenna Mounting: We usually mount antennas on the bullbar using a bracket, which gives them good ground plane and keeps them protected. If no bullbar, we can mount on guard brackets, roof racks, or even the hood edge. The key is elevation and minimizing obstructions. For dual antennas or special cases, we can do custom mounts (some like a short antenna on the roof for convoy, plus a tall one on the bullbar they screw on in the outback). We route the coax cable through existing grommets to the radio, keeping it hidden. Then we tune the antenna if needed (some high-end models are pre-tuned, others we use an SWR meter to adjust for peak performance).

  • Heavy Duty Options: If you do a lot of rough corrugated roads, a spring base antenna is wise. We have heavy-duty spring bases that allow the whip to flex and absorb hits from bushes or vibrations. Also, we carry quick-release mounts, so you can detach a long antenna when not needed (like to fit in garages or to prevent theft).

Neat Installation & Integration

Our experienced installers make sure your UHF works flawlessly and looks great:

  • We take power from an appropriate source – often the accessory circuit so it turns off with the ignition (preventing battery drain). We fuse it as per spec. For remote-head units, we mount the interface or handset cradle securely within reach but not in the way of airbags or other controls. We can often utilize existing switch blanks or cubby holes for the speaker mic connector.

  • We run the mic cable and any extension cables through the dash panels so there’s no tangling or ugly wiring. The speaker is usually built into the unit or handset; if it’s not loud enough, we can add an external extension speaker (sometimes mounting it under the dash or on the driver’s A-pillar) so you hear communications clearly even on rough, noisy roads.

  • Antenna cable routing: We ensure the coax from the antenna is routed safely through the engine bay and firewall, avoiding sharp edges and heat. We leave a service loop so that things aren’t strained when the body flexes relative to the bullbar. All connections are crimped/soldered well – intermittent comms due to poor connections are a no-go for us.

We test the system by doing a radio check (either with a handheld or ask a fellow shop down the road) to verify transmit and receive quality. We’ll show you how to use the channels, squelch control, scanning features, and any paired phone apps (like GME XRS has Bluetooth app connectivity). By the time you leave, you’ll be confident operating your new UHF.

Stay Connected on Every Trip

In the WA outback or even on popular tracks like Powerlines or Mundaring, UHF comms are the lifeline between vehicles. They help you warn others of hazards (“water on the track”, “oncoming convoy”), coordinate overtakes on highways, or just have a friendly chat among mates. We emphasize how competitor pages stress being the communications experts and incorporate those tactics: we highlight our expertise in installation and product knowledge, mention local use-cases (like WA’s terrain), and include strong calls to action.

Remember, UHF doesn’t require any license for the 80 CB channels – it’s free for everyone to use. We’ll remind you of etiquette (using call channels vs conversation channels, emergency channel 5, etc.) so you can get the best experience.

Equip your 4×4 with a UHF radio Perth adventurers trust – because when you’re beyond cellphone coverage, you’ll be glad you did.
