Rear Air Bags for Towing Perth

Towing a caravan, camper or boat often leaves the rear of your 4×4 sitting low, even with good suspension. Rear air bags are a simple way to support the existing springs, reduce rear sag and keep the vehicle closer to level when you are hooked up and loaded. Coastals supplies and installs rear helper air bag kits from Airbag Man, set up for towing and load support on popular 4×4 utes and wagons.

What Rear Air Bags Do on a 4×4

Rear helper air bags do not replace your springs; they work alongside them. The bags sit inside the rear coils or above the leaf springs, depending on the vehicle. When you inflate them, they share part of the load with the springs, which helps:

  • Reduce rear sag when towing or carrying heavy gear

  • Improve stability and steering feel under load

  • Cut down on bottoming out and harsh bumps

  • Keep headlights aimed closer to where they should be

When you are running empty or with light load, the pressure can be reduced so the vehicle rides much like standard. The key is that they are an assist to your current suspension, not a replacement for it.

How Coastals Installs Rear Air Bags for Towing

Coastals uses vehicle-specific helper kits from Airbag Man, matched to the suspension layout of your 4×4. These kits include the bags, brackets, lines and fittings designed to work with the standard suspension and full travel of the vehicle.

During installation we:

  • Mount the air bags in the correct position on the rear suspension

  • Route air lines away from heat, exhaust and moving parts

  • Fit inflation valves in an easy-to-reach location (often near the towbar or inside the tub)

  • Set a starting pressure and show you how to adjust pressure for different loads

Our focus is clean, reliable fitment of the helper kit so you can tow or carry load with more confidence. Your regular mechanic still looks after servicing, alignments and safety checks on the vehicle as a whole.

Limits, Safety and Legal Points

Rear air bags are a load support tool. They help manage how the vehicle carries weight; they do not change the figures on the compliance plate.

Fitting helper airbags:

  • Does not increase GVM, GCM or tow rating

  • Does not increase legal tow ball weight

  • Does not remove the need for correct weight distribution and loading

You still need to:

  • Stay within the vehicle and towbar ratings

  • Distribute weight sensibly in the vehicle and trailer

  • Use an appropriate brake controller and towing hardware

  • Keep up with routine mechanical checks at your workshop

Used properly, rear helper air bags can make loaded driving more stable and predictable, but they are not a way to carry more than the vehicle is designed to handle.

When Rear Air Bags Make Sense

Rear helper air bags are well suited to:

  • Dual-cab utes that alternate between empty weekday use and heavy touring setups

  • 4×4 wagons that tow caravans, camper trailers or horse floats

  • Vehicles that sometimes carry tools, fridges, canopies and drawers, then run empty the rest of the time

They are especially handy when you want flexibility – support when loaded, and a close-to-standard feel when running light.

In some cases, a different suspension package or a certified GVM upgrade (through a suitable provider) may be more appropriate, especially for very heavy constant loads. We can talk you through where rear air bags fit into that picture and when another solution might be a better choice.

Common Questions and Answers

Do rear air bags replace my rear springs?

No. Rear helper air bags work with your existing coil or leaf springs. They share part of the load to help level the vehicle when towing or carrying weight; the springs remain a key part of the suspension.

No. Helper airbags do not change your GVM, GCM, axle ratings or tow limits. They are there to support the suspension and improve how the vehicle carries a legal load. All factory and certified limits still apply.

Yes, when you are not carrying much load you can run the bags at the minimum recommended pressure for that kit. When you hook up a trailer or load the back of the vehicle, you simply add air until the vehicle sits closer to level.

Your usual mechanic should continue to handle routine servicing, wheel alignments and safety inspections. If you ever have concerns about an air bag kit supplied and installed by Coastals – such as leaks, unusual behaviour or questions about pressures – you can come back to us so we can inspect our components and advise on the next steps.
